Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
These FAQs are for the Master of Laws (LL.M.) program only. For more information on the Juris Doctor (J.D.) program, please refer to pages 13-17 of the college brochure (here).
1) When will the LLM Program begin?
The LLM Program begins in August of the current academic year. Please refer to the registration requirements here.
2) How long does it take to complete the LLM Program?
It takes at least one full academic year, comprised of two semesters and one summer session, to complete the LLM Program.
3) May I know the schedule of classes (hours, days) for the LLM Program?
The schedule of classes will vary depending on the professors teaching the course, but generally, most classes will be scheduled for after office hours on weekdays and during weekends. Visiting professors from other countries, however, may opt to deliver their courses in short intensive daily sessions as short as two to three weeks. Individual professors may also decide to offer classes during regular hours.
4) Does the LLM Program operate on a bi-semestral or tri-semestral basis?
The LLM Program operates on a regular calendar of two semesters (August to December and January to May) and one summer session (June to July). The first two semesters may be devoted to regular coursework, while summer session will be reserved for thesis-writing and defense.
5) What should I expect of LLM courses?
Graduate level courses emphasize the development of analytical skills, application of advanced legal thought, and production of insightful research. Since LLM students are expected to be full-fledged lawyers possessed of certain competencies, courses are not going to be taught in the same way as undergraduate law courses. LLM courses are expected to be conducted in an environment of peer-learning and exchange, where teachers and students can learn from each other’s backgrounds and experiences and help each other achieve their respective academic goals. Graduates of the LLM Program are expected to become recognized leaders in their respective fields of practice and expertise.
6) What is the minimum GWA that an LLM student must maintain?
In accordance with University standards, LLM students should maintain at least a 2.0 GWA to be able to complete the program.
7) Where will the LLM courses be taught?
All LLM courses will be taught or delivered at the University of the Philippines campus in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, Metro Manila.
8) Is the LLM Program also offered in the U.P. Diliman Campus?
The LLM Program is not offered in the U.P. Diliman Campus at present.
9) How much will tuition and other miscellaneous fees cost?
Information on tuition and other miscellaneous fees will be provided upon conditional acceptance to the LLM Program.
10) Are scholarships and financial assistance available to take up the LLM Program?
Scholarships and financial assistance are available on the basis of merit and financial need. Students are requested to indicate the necessity of availing of scholarships in their application form. Qualifications for scholarships will be determined separately from qualifications for the LLM program.
11) I am a lawyer and previously I took some LLM and other graduate courses in another university in the Philippines. Will those courses be credited to the LLM Program?
LLM and other graduate courses taken from another Philippine university or law school cannot be given course credit in the LLM Program.
12) I am a lawyer from a different country. Am I qualified to apply for the LLM Program?
Full-fledged lawyers who are not Filipino citizens and who practice law in jurisdictions outside of the Philippines are qualified to apply for the LLM Program.
13) I am a practicing lawyer from another country. Will the LLM Program enable me to meet the requirements for admission to the Bar and practice of law in the Philippines?
The LLM Program, and courses taken under it, do not affect the applicant’s qualifications for admission to the Bar and practice of law in the Philippines. Qualifications for admission to the Bar and practice of law are governed solely by Rule 138 of the Rules of Court.
14) I have taken some training courses and seminars administered by the Philippine Judicial Academy. Will those courses and seminars be credited to the LLM Program?
Training courses and seminars administered by the Philippine Judicial Academy are not credited to the LLM Program, as the academic requirements, course content, program goals, and evaluation methods are entirely different.
15) I am a Filipino citizen with a law degree from a Philippine university, however I have not yet taken and/or passed the Bar Examinations. Am I qualified for the LLM Program?
Local applicants for the LLM Program must have been admitted to the Bar and the practice of law in the Philippines.
16) I need an LLM degree only so that I can qualify for promotion in my workplace. Should I take the LLM Program?
Admission to the LLM Program does not guarantee the eventual acquisition of an LLM degree. Applicants are expected to undertake advanced legal research and will be held to high academic and professional standards throughout their participation in the program. The program is not a steppingstone for job promotion.
17) May I send the application form and supporting documents electronically by e-mail?
Application forms may be sent by e-mail. However, confidential Letters of References must be signed, sealed, and delivered personally or by courier to the U. P. College of Law LLM Program Committee.
